How to Get Into Google AI Overviews

What Google AI Overviews actually are

Short version: an AI Overview is the summarized answer Google writes at the top of a search result, assembled from a small set of sources it trusts. To get cited in one, give Google clear, answer-shaped content, keep your business details consistent everywhere, and build the kind of authority that already wins in search. Nothing guarantees placement, but these steps make you eligible.

When a homeowner searches something like "why is my water heater leaking from the bottom" or "who repairs metal roofs in Tacoma," Google increasingly answers with a paragraph or two of its own, written by AI, sitting above the classic blue links. That block is the AI Overview. It usually names or links a few sources, and being one of them is the new front page.

This sits at the center of generative engine optimization, or GEO. It is not a replacement for search engine optimization. It is the next layer built on top of it, and the businesses earning citations now are compounding an advantage as more of the results page shifts from ten links to one summarized answer.

How an AI Overview differs from classic results

A classic results page is a ranked list. You compete for position one through ten, and the searcher decides who to click. An AI Overview changes the shape of the answer. Instead of handing over a list, Google reads across several pages, writes a synthesized response, and cites the handful of sources it drew from. The searcher may never scroll to the traditional links at all.

That difference matters for a local business in two ways. First, the number of visible winners shrinks. A page-one ranking still helps, but the sources cited inside the Overview get the attention. Second, the way you earn a citation is less about matching a keyword and more about being the clearest, most trustworthy source for the specific question being asked.

Google assembles Overviews from content it already trusts

Google does not write these answers from nothing. It builds them from pages already indexed and judged credible, then pulls the clearest, most relevant passages into a summary. Google has not published the exact formula, and it never will. What is clear in practice is that Overviews lean on the same signals that have always separated trusted results from noise: relevance, clarity, consistency, and authority.

In other words, the work that earns a citation is mostly the work that already builds real authority. A clear website, consistent business information across the web, genuine reviews, trusted local mentions, and content that plainly answers the question a searcher typed. Google is not counting keywords. It is deciding which sources it is confident enough to quote.

How to earn inclusion

There is no button to press and no fee to pay. You earn a place in an AI Overview by being the source Google is most comfortable citing. Five things move that needle.

  • Publish clear, answer-shaped content. Pages that directly answer the questions buyers ask, in plain language, are the passages Google can lift into an Overview. A page that states the answer up front, then explains it, beats a page that buries the point under slogans. This is exactly the kind of content our GEO and SEO work already produces.
  • Keep your entity consistent across Google Business Profile and your site. Your name, address, phone, services, and service area should match everywhere Google looks. When your Business Profile and your website agree on who you are and what you do, Google grows more confident, and confidence is what earns a citation. Contradictions do the opposite.
  • Earn and maintain genuine reviews. Recent, real reviews give Google and prospective customers third-party evidence that you are active and deliver what you claim. A steady stream reads as a healthy business. A burst two years ago reads as one that may have gone quiet.
  • Build trusted local citations. Mentions on local press, industry associations, chambers of commerce, and well-known directories corroborate your website. When more than one credible source describes you the same way, Google has something to stand on when it decides to quote you.
  • Add structured data. Schema markup for your organization, services, reviews, and frequently asked questions helps Google understand exactly what a page is about and which parts answer which questions. It does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity, and less ambiguity means a model can trust you faster.

Why this overlaps with strong SEO

If that list sounds familiar, it should. Almost every item is something a well-run SEO program already does. Clear content, consistent business data, reviews, authoritative mentions, and clean technical markup have driven organic rankings for years. AI Overviews read the same signals, they just use them to write an answer instead of ranking a list.

That is the practical takeaway. You do not need a separate, exotic strategy to appear in AI Overviews. You need the fundamentals done well and interpreted for how AI reads a page. A business with strong local SEO is already most of the way to being citable. The gap is usually structure and clarity, making sure the answer a searcher wants is stated plainly and marked up so Google can find it. Both are fixable.

We wrote a companion guide on the same idea for a different surface, how to rank on ChatGPT, and if you are new to the term, our overview of what GEO is covers the basics.

What this looks like in practice

Rife Masonry is a working example. After building out consistent business details, clear service and location content, and the authority signals above, Rife Masonry now ranks number one across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews in Washington. One clean foundation, cited across every major surface at once. That is the compounding effect. The evidence that earns a Google citation is the same evidence that earns one everywhere else, so the work pays off in more than one place. You can read the details on our Rife Masonry case study.

The mistakes that keep you out

  • Inconsistent business details. A different phone number on one directory, an old address on another, a service you dropped still listed somewhere. Every contradiction lowers Google's confidence in you.
  • Pages that talk about you instead of answering questions. Copy full of slogans and light on plain answers gives Google nothing to quote.
  • No third-party footprint. If your own website is the only place you are described, there is nothing for Google to corroborate before it cites you.
  • Stale reviews. A long gap since your last review signals a business that may not be active.
  • Missing structure. No schema and no clear headings force Google to guess what your page answers, and guessing rarely ends in a citation.

How to check whether it is working

Open Google and search the questions your customers would ask, a few different ways: by service, by city, by problem. Note whether an AI Overview appears, whether you are cited in it, who is cited instead, and whether the summary describes you accurately. Repeat it monthly. It is the simplest scoreboard you have, and it tells you exactly what to fix.

Where to start

If your business information is consistent, your reviews are current, your content plainly answers real questions, and your pages are marked up so Google can read them, you are most of the way there. The gap is usually authority and structure, and both are fixable. See how we approach it on our GEO service page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to appear in an AI Overview?
No. AI Overviews are assembled from organic sources Google trusts, not from ads. You earn a citation with clarity, consistency, and authority, the same signals that drive organic rankings.

Do AI Overviews replace regular search rankings?
No. Classic results still appear below the Overview, and strong rankings still matter. The Overview is a new layer on top, and being cited in it is a separate win worth pursuing alongside your normal SEO.

How long does it take to get cited?
There is no fixed timeline. Because Overviews draw on the same signals as organic search, the businesses that already have consistent details, current reviews, and clear content tend to appear sooner. Building authority from scratch takes longer, but every piece compounds.

Will the same work help me in ChatGPT and Perplexity too?
Yes. The fundamentals that earn a Google citation, clear content, consistent business data, reviews, and trusted mentions, are read by every major AI search tool. Rife Masonry ranks number one across Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews in Washington off one clean foundation.
